‘Living The Dream’ is The Jonny Halifax Invocation’s most sonically immersive and lyrically confrontational work to date. After releasing their 18 minute instrumental epic ‘Red Sand Rääg’ earlier this year, the band continue their exploration of long form recordings with ‘Living The Dream’; a brand new track that clocks in at 12 minutes and nine seconds...this time with words.
It begins with a monolithic riff of buzzing down tuned strings and rumbling bass reeds, propelled by a swaggering narcoleptic funk groove. Rearing up from the primordial swamp with the occult menace of Dr.John’s Gris Gris, delivered with the weight and purpose of Michael Gira’s Swans or Dylan Carlson’s Earth. A cosmos splitting free jazz saxophone scorches face before the shamanic fever dream sermon of our world on the edge begins. As the slow burning low end riff crawls with humid swamp-like heaviosity, Halifax summons, half howl, half whisper, a vision through the haze of a civilisation dancing around its own funeral pyre. Redemption creeps in and out of consciousness as the chorus rises from the funereal march with gospel-like transcendence.
But then, just as the hallucinogenic doom prophecy reaches it’s scorched, apocalyptic conclusion... suddenly... The Invocation shift gears; everything doubles, triples, rhythms multiply and the band are blazing into the stratosphere. Percussion shakes all around, guitars spiral and weave, basslines fracture and mutate, more strings, more horns, more skronk, as the P-Funk Mothership crashes into Sun Ra’s afro-futurist sonic pyramid, exploding into a fireball of sheer incandescent joy. The Invocation paint a sonic future that is feral, chaotic and defiantly alive!
At the molten core of ‘Living The Dream’ is an ironic critique of aspirational culture in an age of mass hallucination. While the planet cooks, economies teeter, and the forces of fascism polish their boots for another go-round; cognitive dissonance becomes the new lifestyle choice. The Invocation hold up a cracked mirror to this strange and uneasy state of collective denial, refracting the dystopian narratives into the sounds of resistance, invoking the spirits of love and revolutionary possibility.
‘Living The Dream’ is the latest in the singles series of The Jonny Halifax Invocation special limited lathe cut vinyl editions on the band’s own Greasy Noise imprint. Releasing across all digital platforms on God Unknown.
The Jonny Halifax Invocation are a collective of sonic pioneers, defying convention and transcending boundaries with their esoteric blend of cosmic blues, psychedelic noise and free jazz. Committed to continually pushing the boundaries of their sound, they are known for their unique and uncompromising live performances.
“Geographically based in London, spiritually situated in a Chicuahuan Desert shack, Jonny Halifax wears the look of a man who has seen things only describable through music. Across two 50 minute sets, sounds shift in and out of focus, a hypnotic peyote pulse punctuated by twin harmonicas, melodica, and goat horn. Sold out in advance with seekers turned away at the door, there’s real momentum behind The Invocation. The only question is, how high can they go?” (Mark Raison, Shindig! Magazine)
