Mike Cooper returns to Discrepant with The Dream Island of Birds, a work shaped by field recordings, recollection and electronic transformation.
The project traces back to the early 1990s, when Cooper met illustrator Charles van Sandwyk on a small island in Fiji. Years later, van Sandwyk described vivid dreams experienced during recovery from a serious accident, later forming the basis of his illustrated book The Dream Island of Birds—a detail that stayed with Cooper.
In 2012, an artist residency on Pulau Ubin, between Singapore and Malaysia, saw Cooper record the island’s bird and insect life. These recordings form the foundation of the album, reshaped through digital processing and combined with synthetic elements. Track titles reference local species, though the sounds themselves are interpretive rather than documentary—one piece is entirely electronic.
Balancing observation with invention, The Dream Island of Birds moves between natural source material and imagined environments.
