Concert recorded on March 28, 1960, at the Apollo Theatre in Düsseldorf, which had been converted into a television studio by German Radio.

Originally planned as a performance by the Miles Davis Quintet and guests, with Miles Davis ultimately choosing not to take part in the recording, leaving John Coltrane to take the lead.
