When Madlib travelled to Brazil in 2002 to work on Brasilintime, he had one goal: meet Ivan "Mamão" Conti, drummer of the legendary trio Azymuth. He’d made a tribute record to Azymuth and wanted to share it with Mamão in person. One rainy night in Rio, the pair hit the studio — and a few hours later, the rhythm tracks that would become Sujinho were born.
Released under the name Jackson Conti, this collaboration draws on the deep well of Brazilian music — including compositions by Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Luiz Eça, Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Marcos Valle, João Donato, Dom Um Romão, Airto Moreira, and even George Duke. With vocals from Thalma de Freitas, Sujinho threads Madlib’s off-kilter production through Mamão’s polyrhythmic mastery, reimagining Brazilian standards like 'Upa Neguinho' for a new generation. The result is a vibrant, head-nodding fusion of samba, soul, and beat science.
