"Listening to THEATRE’s enveloping new EP, Incarnate, feels akin to slipping into a pensive, slightly unsettling dream. The Irish quintet—comprising Maeve O’Shea (vocals), Oscar Halpin (guitar), Dara Gooney (guitar), Gerry Sheil (bass), and Sean Storan (drums)—position themselves at a dark, atmospheric crossroads. By combining bits of brooding goth rock, shimmering dream pop, and pedal-heavy shoegaze, they weave together a shadowy, textured sonic tapestry.

Anchoring this swirling, reverb-soaked ether is vocalist Maeve O’Shea. She sings with a fragile innocence that contrasts sharply with the dense, muscular music churning behind her. Drawing immediate and favorable comparisons to the ethereal ’90s outfit Cranes, her delicate delivery can feel warmly comforting one moment and deeply eerie the next.

The band operate at their absolute best on standout track “The Fall.” Here, the interlocking guitars and rhythmic drive conjure an underlying sense of melancholy, tension, and existential isolation. Yet, crucially, Incarnate is rarely a depressing listen; instead, it feels hypnotic and engaging, meant to wash over the listener in cathartic waves rather than drag them into the dark.

While this brief collection might not yet be quite as immersive as the indie rock/grunge-pop grit or widescreen atmospheric rock mastered by modern heavyweights like Wolf Alice and Heartworms, you can almost hear that potential brewing just beneath the surface. Incarnate remains an absorbing, evocative effort that proves THEATRE is a band well worth keeping an eye on."
