The complete album + 2 bonus tracks - limited edition pressing on 180g crystal clear vinyl. At the Village Gate followed the enormous success of Nina Simone's first live album, Nina Simone at Town Hall, which was recorded on the 12th of September 1959 at New York's iconic concert hall. That same year, Nina signed a contract with the New York-based label Colpix Records and recorded her second album for them, The Amazing Nina Simone, which contained the original studio version of 'Children Go Where I Send You', also performed at the Village Gate and included in this live recording from the venue.
The two bonus performances that follow the eight on the original album are thought to be from the same Village Gate gig; the Israeli folksong 'Vaynikehu' and the African-American spiritual 'Sinnerman'.
"Nina Simone has the rare ability of really being able to dig into material and bring out unexpected meaning in familiar lyrics. Nina Simone, who was always in a category by herself, is heard throughout in her early prime."- **** Scott Yanow, AllMusic
