Middlesbrough multi-instrumentalist Oli Heffernan returns under his Ivan The Tolerable moniker with his most conceptually ambitious project to date: a complete, ground-up reimagining of Gustav Holst’s iconic 1918 suite The Planets, completely overhauled for the anxiety and isolation of 2026.
Recorded across three winter months using warmth-decayed reel-to-reel tape, modular synth rigs, warped woodwinds, and cavernous bass drones, The Planets strips away the grand bombast of Holst’s full brass sections and replaces it with a hypnotic blend of heavy kosmische drift, free-jazz saxophones, and claustrophobic ambient textures.
This isn't a cover record, it's an exorcism of space.
