For more than five decades, Embryo have moved freely between worlds, never settling into one sound for long. Founded in Munich in 1969, the collective folds krautrock into jazz, free improvisation into inner- and outer-European rhythms, and far-reaching sound rituals into an urban avant-garde language all their own.
That spirit still runs deep. Since 2015, Marja Burchard, daughter of founder Christian Burchard, has carried Embryo forward with the same curiosity and openness. Here, long-standing ties with Indian musicians Deobrat Mishra and Prashant Mishra come into focus after a musical connection that began in 2008 at Zurich’s Wasserkirche.
Recorded in 2023 at Minga Records Studio in Munich with Tobias Siegert, this release on Toy Tonics’ sublabel Kryptox features Marja Burchard, Maasl Maier, Jakob Thun, Deobrat Mishra and Prashant Mishra, plus guests Niko Schabel on The Gift and Moonwalk, Dr. Chandreyee Maitra on Rivers, and Dattatreya Desai on Mishra Dance.
