Coil’s 1984 debut EP How To Destroy Angels gets its first reissue via Sub Rosa, having originally appeared on L.A.Y.L.A.H. Described as “ritual music for the accumulation of male sexual energy”, it treats sound as a tool for affecting body and mind rather than simple entertainment. The piece was constructed around magickal and numerological ideas, with Mars and the male symbol among its key reference points. An early statement of Coil’s fascination with ritual, sexuality and the transformative possibilities of sound, it established ideas that would run throughout their work.
