Cabaret Voltaire’s Live 82-85 gathers three archive recordings from Liverpool and Sheffield in 1982, plus Toronto in 1985, documenting a pivotal stretch in the group’s evolution. The 1982 performances follow the same line-up and era that produced Hai, capturing the band in the aftermath of Chris Watson’s departure and during the exploratory period surrounding 2x45. These recordings reveal a tougher, more open-ended approach that hinted at alternate paths beyond the slicker Some Bizarre/Virgin years that followed.
The Toronto set, recorded near the end of a North American tour in 1985, shows another side of the group entirely. While the studio records of the era became increasingly refined, the live shows remained volatile, improvised and confrontational, pushing rhythm and noise into more anarchic territory. Together, these recordings offer a revealing document of Cabaret Voltaire at two distinct and transformative moments in their history.
