"A meditative & borderless free jazz exploration, Orient captures the nomadic Don Cherry and his bands during two magical concerts in Paris and Carpentras, France between the spring and summer of 1971. Originally released in Japan on the BYG label, this double album detailed Cherry’s adventurous and romantic exploits in the Far East and his hypnotic strains of Oriental instrumentation. Alongside his pocket trumpet, Cherry plays piano, flutes, and vocals, with his spouse Moki on the tambura. Featuring the storming drum works of Hans Bennink and Okay Temiz, as well as the prodigious Johnny Dyani on the bass, these recordings ploughed the depths of Indian mysticism and are compelling examples of the wholly generous, universal approach that characterized Cherry’s compositions.
The very aptly titled Orient was a highpoint in Don Cherry’s large discography and is a must-hear document for all spiritual music and free jazz aficionados.
